Program overview

The Buzzing Safari Program is a hands-on environmental education and agriculture initiative integrating organic farming, agroforestry, biodiversity conservation and entrepreneurial learning. Pupils actively participate in establishing and managing a functional school farm ecosystem.

Sustainable Vegetable Production

Bed preparation, planting, weeding and full harvest cycles.

Nursery Management & Agroforestry

Potting, seedbed preparation and tree establishment.

Pollinator Conservation

Establishment and stewardship of a dedicated pollinator garden.

Value Addition & Marketing

Processing, packaging, branding and basic sales practicals.

The three phases

Phase 01Vegetable Garden Establishment & Basic Farm Systems Training

Establishes the school vegetable garden while introducing students to the core principles of sustainable agriculture and farm management.

Training topics

  • Introduction to organic farming
  • Introduction to record keeping methods and report writing

Practical activities

  • Planting vegetable seedbeds
  • Demarcation and layout of the vegetable garden
  • Controlling soil erosion in the garden
  • Emptying the existing compost pit and layering a new one
  • Transplanting vegetables into prepared beds

Integrated pest management

  • Planting spring onions as a natural, intercropped pest deterrent

Phase 02Agroforestry & Introduction to Sales and Marketing

Expands the farm through tree cultivation, nursery management and foundational marketing concepts.

  • Introduction to agroforestry principles and benefits
  • Vegetable marketing: pricing, presentation and channels

  • Planting of herbal and fruit trees within the farm system
  • Potting and nursery bed preparation
  • Planting seeds in potting bags and open seedbeds
  • Transplanting seedlings from nursery to field positions
  • Weeding vegetable crops and maintaining bed health
  • Harvesting mature vegetables

Marketing & value addition intro

  • Preparing and presenting produce for sale
  • Simple pricing and market value concepts
  • How produce can be processed to increase market value
  • Basic post-harvest handling practices

Phase 03Pollinator Garden, Value Addition & Sales

Strengthens ecological awareness while introducing entrepreneurial skills — connecting farm ecology to economic opportunity.

  • Establishment and planting of the pollinator garden
  • Ongoing maintenance of the full garden ecosystem
